Freeze the use case, model version, authorized inputs, trial period, resource budget and acceptance checks before evaluation. Separate historical evidence review from prospective integration observations. Preserve failures and changes, define stop conditions, and end with a bounded decision that identifies what passed, what failed and what remains untested.
Choose questions the trial can answer
Name a small set of procurement questions: can the buyer interpret the outputs, reproduce a supplied sample, ingest the delivery and obtain explanations for discrepancies? Identify questions needing longer evidence, such as stability across market conditions, separately. A two-week access period may reveal an undocumented field or a difficult integration dependency. It is not automatically a meaningful sample for estimating a strategy's expected return, drawdown distribution or future execution quality.
The 2026 interagency model-risk guidance discusses testing and validation in relation to intended use. It is banking guidance, not a required trial template for all buyers. The practical trial design here is illustrative: match each question to evidence the available time can realistically produce. Keep historical research review, software correctness checks and prospective observations in separate categories so a successful integration test cannot be described as independent investment validation.
Resolve the evaluation boundary before access
Record the participating entity, reviewers, infrastructure, datasets and permitted outputs. Decide whether any external specialist needs access and whether real portfolio information is necessary. WIPO's technology-transfer overview distinguishes confidentiality arrangements from licence arrangements. For a trial, ask qualified reviewers to assess both the disclosure conditions and the actual permitted activities under the relevant jurisdiction; do not assume that a signed confidentiality document settles execution, retention or sharing rights.
Set a concrete resource budget for analyst time, engineering time and data acquisition. Identify the end date and the person authorized to stop work. Make clear that completing the trial does not automatically purchase a subscription, approve production use or authorize public reporting. Those decisions require their own evidence and scope. A bounded evaluation should leave the buyer able to say no without relying on indefinite extensions or an already embedded operational dependency.
Freeze identity and acceptance definitions
Capture the model identifier, configuration, documentation version, input definitions and expected delivery schedule before collecting results. Define how coverage and timeliness will be counted, including holidays and explicitly excluded instruments. A missing file is not the same as an expected file containing no applicable observations. Specify both conditions so the denominator cannot be changed after an inconvenient result appears or after a reviewer notices unexplained gaps in a summary chart.
Predeclare what constitutes a critical failure, a repairable integration issue and an inconclusive result. If the provider changes the model during the window, preserve the earlier observations and identify the new version separately. A corrected parser can justify rerunning a fixture, but it should not erase the original error or turn already inspected observations into untouched evidence. Record which question the rerun answers and which prior conclusions are no longer supported.
Work through a hypothetical completeness check
Suppose a hypothetical trial schedules eighteen instruments for ten sessions, creating 18 x 10 = 180 expected instrument-session records. The buyer predeclares a 98% completeness target for this integration check and separately requires every missing record to have an explained status. It receives 168 usable records and twelve unexplained absences. Completeness is 168 / 180 = 93.3%, rounded to one decimal place, so the stated target is not met.
The team records a delivery-evidence failure, not a conclusion that the model loses money. It requests an explanation and decides whether a bounded retest would resolve the integration question. The target and counts are invented teaching assumptions, not provider commitments or universal procurement thresholds. Even 180 complete observations would not constitute 180 independent strategy experiments, because instruments and sessions can share market conditions, inputs and model logic.
| Hypothetical check | Value |
|---|---|
| Expected records | 180 |
| Usable records | 168 |
| Unexplained absences | 12 |
| Observed completeness | 93.3% |
| Predeclared buyer target | 98% |
Exercise failure and correction paths
Use synthetic fixtures to test duplicate files, missing identifiers, invalid units and out-of-order revisions. Check that the receiving system rejects or isolates ambiguous records rather than silently using them. Ask how a disputed result is investigated and how a corrected result is linked to its predecessor. Preserve the original delivery where permitted, with the correction reason and receipt time, so the trial can distinguish a calculation issue from a transport or interpretation problem.
Keep observations proportional to their evidence. A single successful recovery demonstrates that one tested path worked under those conditions; it does not prove an availability percentage for the year. Similarly, a sample match establishes consistency for that fixture, not robustness across unseen regimes. Document limitations alongside successes. Include the buyer's operational burden, since a service that requires repeated manual repair may not fit the intended workflow even when its underlying research remains credible.
Close with a decision and a disposition record
At the scheduled end, classify each question as supported, unsupported or unresolved and link it to evidence. State whether the buyer should proceed to contract review, request a narrowly defined additional test or decline. Do not extend the trial simply to wait for a favorable market period. Any extension should have a specific unresolved question, a resource cap and a decision date, with the original results remaining part of the evaluation record.
Disable temporary access and handle supplied material according to reviewed retention obligations and permissions. Preserve the decision memorandum and authorized evidence with their versions and caveats. A successful procurement trial is one that improves a decision within its limits, including a well-supported decision not to buy. It is not automatically a model certification, an execution authorization or a claim that hypothetical historical results can be achieved in a real account.
- Predeclare denominators, stop conditions and resource limits.
- Keep integration observations separate from strategy-validation evidence.
Evaluation checkpoints
- A short trial should answer bounded procurement questions.
- Freeze identity and acceptance checks before seeing results.
- Close access and retain only appropriately authorized evidence.
